What do you really think about when you think about money?

I mean deep down in your heart, in your innermost place...

• Does money or lack of money strike fear in your heart?  
• Does it worry you or stress you out?

Your attitude about money will play a huge role in how much peace you have in your life and how big of a piece of the pie God will trust you with.

In 2 Corinthians Paul is talking to the church in Corinth about following through on a commitment to give generously to help support other believers that were in need. The church in Corinth was not unlike the demographic of Warrior. They were considered to be wealthy, relative to many of the other churches. The Macedonian church was considered to be very poor and Paul was quick to point out that "out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity." 2 Corinthians 8:2

Paul goes on to remind the richer church of Corinth that they need to follow through on their commitment to give generously. I'm thinking that Paul needed to remind them because they were second guessing their promise to give.

Why would Paul need to remind someone that is rich to give?

Being generous does not depend on how much you have, it depends on who you think gave you the ability to make money and whether or not you can trust Him to make more than enough again.

For most of us in the western world money accumulation is an end game and money is considered to exist in finite quantities. If my neighbour makes more that me, then he is getting a bigger piece of a fixed size pie which leaves less for me. If I give my money away, then I have less in reserve to take care of myself and my family.

Paul reminds us that God looks at money from the opposite direction.

He reminds us "Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:6,7.To God money isn't an end game and money isn't a finite entity.

Money is seed that can be MULTIPLIED!

A farmer understands this well. A farmer will plant 1 kernel of corn with an expectation that this one kernel will grow into a corn stalk with several ears of corn and each ear will have hundreds of kernels. Imagine the multiplication if you were to take all the kernels from the one corn stalk and replant them all. In 2 seasons that one original kernel will turn into thousands.

This promise of abundant multiplication is for every area of our lives regardless of our financial status.

It is noteworthy to see that having more money typically makes people less generous. God is more concerned about the abundance of grace then he is about the abundance of money.

"And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." 2 Corinthians 9:8
